An original take on an ancient theme, lanterns have been used for millennia. A Simple curvaceous form provides the basis of this piece, the molded ply base functions as a delicate handle and as housing for the glass funnel that contains a standard tea light. Part of the design inspiration for the lantern is the plywood work of Charles and Ray Eames and the delicate and refined Butterfly Stool by Sori Yanagi, however, Lloyd is keen to exploit this use of molded ply in unusual applications. This lantern demonstrates his interest in form and structure, enabling materials to be manipulated into simple yet unexpected solutions. The Japanese aesthetic has defined Lloyd’s work, not surprisingly, considering his affinity with Zen Buddhism and his appreciation of this particular culture.
